Still Life And Creative Composition
April 15th -19th 2023
Composition is sometimes called a ‘hidden element’ in a painting. It is often overlooked or not considered until it is too late and an otherwise good work is spoiled because certain aspects of placement and emphasis were not considered early enough.
This workshop will explore how to fine tune or totally reinvent arrangements rather than just take them as found. It will show compositional methods derived from Degas and Charles Rennie Macintosh. The methods which will be covered are also applicable to landscape subject matter, but easier to learn with still life.
If you have a group of objects, natural or man-made with associations or memories, or you simply enjoy ordinary everyday things around you…. these are what you should bring as starting points, photo references are also good. We will create paintings from these sources through making observed studies and using imagination and a playful approach to picture making. We will learn about and consider many ways of composing from Degas and Macintosh to Japanese scroll painting and mandalas of all kinds. The main medium will be acrylics though this compositional approach is suitable for any medium.
This course may also be taken in conjunction with the following one if you feel like a whole week of creative explorations to further your painting.

The Mood of Colour
April 19th – 23rd 2023
In this workshop we will explore the secret of powerful colour expression and discover ways to create atmosphere and mood in a painting. Understanding the use of colour key enables us to tackle any subject in numerous ways, and allows us to control and decide the atmosphere as we choose. this way of working means we are not limited to what we may have observed, it means we are able to choose colour pallettes to heighten an atmosphere, or to create a completley new one. this allows us to create powerful expressions in our painting no matter what the subject matter or medium.
We will use the wonderful surroundings at Cober Hill as our inspiration, or you can bring your own sketches and photo references or a range will be provided. Still life of portrait subjects are also suitable as starting points.
We will work mainly with acrylics and a bit of mixed media- acrylic pigment pens, pastels orr college elements…. but the theme is applicable for all mediums so bring your favourites. Get in touch with Bella if you are unsure.
